Week 1 Blog Response

Hello and welcome to the Security Administration blog. Below you will find questions pertaining to the text, the course, or the security industry.   1. 2. Give two reasons why non-security management should not have line authority over security employees.
    A. Non-security management may not have the experience in security-related situations, nor the authority via commission to make an arrest or use physical force if needed. Also, due to lack of experience in security situations, non-security personnel may accidentally escalate a situation unnecessarily.
    B. Security personnel cannot be afraid of retaliation if the need arises to detain, arrest, or give orders to non-security management in extreme situations.

    2. Good points, Justin. Additionally, having non-security management over security personnel can cause issues in that they may not see the benefits of having those security personnel available. They thereby, may relegate those personnel to obscure shifts, positions, or eliminate them altogether through one manner or another. As such, it is better to have security management in charge of security personnel. As you stated, non-security management does not always understand security needs.

  3. 3. Explain the principle of unity of command.
    Unity of command is the organized standard of an employee answering to only one supervisor. That supervisor responds also to one supervisor, and so forth on and on climbing up the ladder in a hierarchic fashion. This is also used in cases in which a company is owned by multiple people, even groups.

    2. Being a worker at Mc. Donalds, I have 5 people who are ahead of me in command-- the crew trainer, the shift manager, the hiring manager, the manager of the store, and the owner of the store. When something goes wrong at the store, I know exactly who to report to depending on the situation.

    3. So KJ, if you have 5 people over you doesnt that say the opposite of what the term unity of command is trying to do? You having all those "bosses" could possibly cause or create a since of confusion.

  4. 4. How does security contribute to the company's profits? Security contribute to the company's profit by making sure merchandise is not stolen or has a back up plan if items are stolen. Security gives the company preparation to most circumstances that can happen, which gives the company a procedure to follow in order to increase profits rather than decrease them. The loss of items puts a dent in profits while a loss prevention program ran by security increases profits.

    1. Talking about that today took me by surprise, I wouldn't expect just a few security guards to save businesses potentially millions of dollars depending on the business. Pretty interesting stuff.

  5. 1. Discuss the problems that may arise in organizing work by time.

    The problem with doing this is that sometimes it creates confusion within the staff on who is in charge at certain times and how much staff needs to be on duty during the dead periods of the place, like at 3 am. Also another problem that this can create is if you have for example 6 places that need to be manned by guards and someone doesn't show up, what do you do? You are then short someone in a vital area. Thats where organizing by crime can create issues.

  6. 3. Explain the unity of command

    Unity of command follows the idea that a subordinate should have only one person to whom they are directly responsible. In business, this means that no employee should ever have more than one boss.

    1. I find it interesting that I work in a department with multiple supervisors and managers directly over me. Sometimes this is a good thing, and sometimes I get told different things by different people. Unity of command is great for having one single standard to hold employees under you by.

    2. Unity of command sounds like the a logical way to go because like Justin said different managers or supervisors have various ways of how they like things done. In order to make sure operations are carried out efficiently and the correct way one leader to a certain group would be helpful to lessen the "telephone" syndrome.

    Something that I have noticed being discussed about the unity of command is concerning having too many people to report to. However, something that I have noticed from my job is the lack of someone to report to. Rather than having too many supervisors, there is disunity in that there are not enough supervisors. In other words, there is no one specific person to report to.

  8. Discuss the problems that may arise in organizing work by time.

    Organizing work by time can cause many conflicts in a business. When only using time as a source, a business may face an unbalance in the service needed. One can easily place a number of workers in a shift, but not place the proper skilled workers in that shift. Organizing work by time will only guarantee that a body will be present during that specific shift. A business isn't just looking for bodies; they are looking for quality work, authority, and order. In order to organize work among individuals, one will have to come up with a logical plan to ensure that the business run smoothly. Having a supervisor, categorizing people who will work well with each other, or categorizing people by specific duty or skill are all ways to organize work.

    1. There are some great points here KJ. If I may add, another problem that may arise is shift coverage. When creating or developing a shift it is difficult to account for days of sick leave or emergencies. So then you develop the problem of over working people if one individual is always sick.

  9. . Explain the principle of unity of command

    According to the text Unity of Command means that an employee should be under the direct control of one and onle one imediate superior.This principle also dictates that a task or function requiring the action of two or more people must also be under the direct control of one supervisor.
