1. Define and explain constructive discipline.
ReplyDeleteConstructive discipline is action that involves informing the employee of a problem or problems and correcting it as needed. This will enhance performance and trust within the communication process for employees and supervisors. This demonstrates the need and want to help all employees to succeed as well as thriving within the workplace. It will build a strong relationships between Directors, Supervisors, and lower level employees and have them all on the same foundation in order to have a stable environment for everyone.
They are processes in constructive discipline.

2. Written warning
3. Suspension
4. Termination of Employment
I think constructive discipline is important because it maintains order in a company. What are you all's opinion on it?
I think you really hit this concept on the proverbial "head of the nail", Miss Kendra. The purpose of constructive discipline being a corrective action versus a punitive action. And I definitely agree with you that this will provide a much more stable environment for all who work in the department/company.
DeleteGreat observation!
2. Briefly describe the Theory X and Theory Y assumptions about human behavior.
ReplyDeleteTheory X: One will do anything possible to avoid work. The reasoning is because he or she is threatened with punishment to get the work done. The person avoids responsibility and much rather work security.
Theory Y: One choose work for satisfaction. He or she has a natural mental and or physical effort to work. This person mostly makes the best of their job. This person seeks the goals of the company and often time will seek responsibility or have the willingness to accept responsibility.
These theories remind me of psychology. The type A person versus the Type C. Type A personalities are often high-achieving "workaholics" who multi-task, push themselves with deadlines. this would be the Theory Y person. While on the other hand Type C personalities The Type C individual displays conflict avoidance, high social desirability, over compliance and over patience, this would be the Theory X person. In the end many theories could fit these certain people.
DeleteJust curious as it has been a while since I've taken a psychology class, what are the other types of person? E.g. Type B or D?
Delete2. Briefly describe the Autocratic Theory, the Custodial Theory, and the Supportive Theory of organizational behavior.
ReplyDeleteI think that the best way to sum up the Autocratic Theory is with a quotation the text uses from the literature work, "Charge of the Light Brigade". "Yours is not to reason why. Yours is but to do or die". While I hope that no supervisor would threaten an employee with this, it demonstrates the attitudes central to the Autocratic Theory; that is, the management decides what to do, when to do it, why to do it, how to do it, and who does it. The line employees are simply there to carry out their orders.
The Custodial Theory can be summed up in that the company becomes a "sugar daddy" for the employee. The management believes that the only reason the employee stays is for the benefits offered, and if those benefits are not offered, then the employee will leave, thereby forcing management to hunt down another qualified individual. I quite nearly states that the individual employee is more valuable than the company as a whole. Slightly backwards from how it should be.
The Supportive Theory is, as the text infers, the best theory to use in supervision and leadership. The reason is because it depends upon the individual employee to work, and it merely asks that the supervisor helps the individual succeed at both their job, and as an individual.
This also falls into McGregor's Theory Y of work. That is, the employee wants to work, he just needs the opportunity, and some support from management.
There is a fine line between punishment and discipline. Punishment dwells on past misdeeds while discipline works towards future deeds. In constructive discipline, there are levels in which the action should be taken; the result must correlate to the seriousness of the problem or offense. The degrees are verbal reprimand, a written

4. According to Herzberg’s Work Motivation Theory, what are the motivations that come from the work itself? Why do the job surroundings or hygiene factors not lead to work satisfaction?
ReplyDeleteThe motivations that come from the work itself are responsibility, achievement, recognition, advancement, and growth. Hygiene factors are expected once the employees have experienced receiving them, but these work motivators not only have intrinsic value, but are not as expected and will be more rewarding than something extrinsic that is required as a benefit.
In my opinion I think the feeling of achievement can go really far. Even if you are in a job where you aren't too happy financially, but that company makes you feel important and you can accomplish goals then you will be happy where you are it.
DeleteIf you aren't doing so well financially would still feel that same importance.
DeleteDefine and explain constructive discipline.
ReplyDeleteConstructive discipline is action that involves informing the employee of a problem or problems and correcting it as needed. This will enhance performance and trust within the communication process for employees and supervisors. This shows the need to help the employees and build a relationship with them. This will help everyone come together to make a successful environment.
Briefly describe the Autocratic Theory, the Custodial Theory, and the Supportive Theory of organizational behavior.
ReplyDeleteThe Autocratic theory is one about absolute power. In this theory they believe they people don't want to do anything unless they are forced to do so, and apparently this will get good work out of people. The custodial theory is where its all about economics. You give your employees what they want financially and they will give you good work in this theory. The supportive theory is where the managers create a good work environment for there employees so it is not a drag to go to work everyday.
I would add that the type of corrective action is determine by the severity of the issue in the work place
DeleteBriefly describe the Autocratic Theory, the Custodial Theory, and the Supportive Theory of organizational behavior
ReplyDeleteAutocratic: This theory is based on absolute power, tends to be threatening, relying negative motivation backed by power. This approach is a useful way to get work done, because the person in charge has total authority and control over decision making
Custodial:in this theory there is a lot more trust unlike in the Autocratic theory. This theory depend on a company's wealth to provide economic benefits for each employee. The benefits come in the form of pensions,or medical benefits.
Supportive: This theory wants to make work environments more acceptable. Make employees actually wont to be there.
