  1. 2. How can a security professional become engaged within the community? List as many ideas as you can.

Security professionals can become engaged within the community by:
Volunteering at local parades and festivals
Going to schools for functions such as career days
Acting as a sort of liaison between his community (neighbors) and local law enforcement (in the vein of Community Policing)
Teaching classes on law, security, first aid, CPR, etc.
Working with local law enforcement on investigations
Acting as school campus security and safety
Giving security consultations to small businesses either free of charge, or at a discounted rate
Encouraging and putting forth the word concerning job shadowing
Encouraging and putting forth the word concerning internships
Putting forth job openings and encouraging application thereto

While I am sure that there are numerous other ideas, these are the first that come to my mind.
Please feel free to add any and all that you may think of.

    1. Security professionals could also engage in neighborhood watch, whatever small merit that has.

    2. They could also post ads on certain job searching sites to try and recruit and talk about careers in security

  2. 1. What are the positive and negative impacts employees can have on a community?
    A. On the positive side, employees can contribute to a community's economy. Employees can be an important part of the social life of a community. Security employees can also contribute to the safety of a community by knowing what to look for in regards to criminal activity and informing the police of problems. On the negative side, employees can cause problems in the community if they are of a different socioeconomic status than the area a business serves (unfortunately.) Also, if the employees are dumb, they themselves can cause problems and disturbances in the community.

    1. Mr. Justin, I think that you have hit some good points, however I can think of a few other things that I can see having merit. On the positive side, employees, especially security employees can also help to educate people, even in their informal everyday conversations, about what security officers do, and how security really works. On the negative side however, business employees, and especially security employees, are often held to a higher standard than other persons. And as such, just like police officers, even when off duty, security employees are still representing the company they work for, and could have a greater influence on perception of both the company they are employed by, but also on the security industry in general. Consider the issues that cropped up with Blackwater Security (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/30/us/before-shooting-in-iraq-warning-on-blackwater.html?_r=0). Granted this was during their contract, but the same, or similar can also happen when employees are off duty as well.

  3. What are the positive and negative impacts employees can have on a community?

Employees can serve as volunteers in the community and make a positive impact, and they can also do work in schools and make a positive impact on kids while creating a reputation for their company. In a negative way they could be arrogant and create negative relationships with other people in the community. They could also break daily laws and be harmful to the community.

    1. I agree with you. I am an employee at a children's center and I do not get paid to work. I'm a volunteered mentor and my purpose is to encourage the children of the community to live a successful life. To basically help them set positive goals for themselves.

  4. What books would you recommend a Security Director or a Security Manager read, or training they might engage in to hone their leadership skills? What books have you read on the subject?

I will have them read a book called "IBM I Security Administration and Compliance"

The goal of this book is to explain security best practices as they pertain to the IBM i operating system, using clear and understandable terms and concepts.
